Last updated on July 27th, 2020 at 08:54 am Reading Time: 3 minutes With jazz standards too, but there is much more flexibility required in actually rendering them. With anything from the core classical repertoire, the obvious major composers, to a good listener, you almost already know the piece before you learn it. I don't understand your second suggestion - pitch of a particular chord would be determined by how much variation there is in pitch around it? Could you give an example of how it would work? I'd be interested in any suggestions from folks with more musical theory than myself. So I started from a chart like this:Īcetylcholine Bmajor OR Dmajor (Acetylcholine has two precursor amino acids rather than one)īut even if one accepts the logic in step two, there's probably still better ways to assign sounds. Here's how I actually assigned them so people get an idea: I started with pentatonic scaling (G, C, A, B and D) and four major neurotransmitters (GABA, Serotonin, Dopamine, Acetylcholine) and assigned tones to the neurotransmitters based on which 'sounded' like the emotions those neurotransmitters give. If you've ideas what chords should be assigned to which codons, I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts there (or anyone who's into music and logic puzzles). Unfortunately, most people I asked from a music theory perspective didn't have much interest in suggesting different approaches here, so I had to work off my own subjective sense. My thinking is, someone could come up with a better logic (not using emotion as the common known element) or apply the same logic using different musical elements (assign different tones given the same emotional targets). That's what I consider 'step two' of the process. One can also assign emotions to musical elements, hence there's a basis for assigning sounds to codons in a non-arbitrary way, with emotional association acting as the cypher between the two languages. Individual neurotransmitters are associated with particular emotions, and also particular amino acids - therefore, one can assign emotions to a subset of codons. What I hit on is convergence of emotional associations. So I wanted an approach that had logic in the loop somewhere, even if it had enough subjectivity that someone else following the same logic would come to a different conclusion. I think that gets stuck in the postmodern dilemma, where everything is subjective so there's no basis to compare one system to another. Where I disagree with a lot of existing approaches is that given the decision to assign sounds on the basis of codons, most people assign them arbitrarily. I'd say we agree on step one, I'd be interested in your feedback on how I approached steps two and three. I agree that codons are probably the best basic unit to work off rather than base pairs or other units of organization. My ears help but not much, since 'confirming' the sound is much harder with jazz than with classical music (it's unexpected, so again, there's some kind of delay between 'I hear the note' and 'ok that's right' while there's essentially no delay with classical music where my brain is kind of 'primed for acceptance' So while I anticipate with classical music and just confirm after the fact/right when the note actually shows up, with Bill Evans I have to think hard and actually confirm everything. The improv part of jazz I'm not good at but I get, but I've also tried playing from transcriptions (Bill Evans in particular), and have found I'm extremely slow at reading the music.Īfter thinking about it, I suspect it's because the music makes no sense to me so I can't guess what's coming ( which is what I do with classical music). Now, I'm supposed to be a reasonably good sight reader, or at least that's what I thought. I've recently started playing jazz piano, after years of classical piano. This might be tangentially related - I'm not sure. There is a Japanese notice on the Fujifilm Global website, and the film’s data sheet is available in PDF format. This can be removed with domestic bleach, and when thoroughly washed and dried a very serviceable negative can be had. The film comes in a peel-apart format, and the section most people discard contains a negative that is difficult to see because it has a black coating on the outside – to prevent light getting into the pack. The Fujifilm FP-100 films are particularly popular with enthusiasts and professionals because they produce very good quality images, but also because a negative can be recovered, cleared and used for making prints. The company used to produce a black and white version too, but that was stopped in 2014. Falling demand and sales are cited as the reasons for the ending of the product line, which also spells the end of the working life of Type 100 cameras. The company says that it will halt production in spring this year, but that stocks will continue to be available for some time after that. The film has only been available in the 3.25x4.25in size recently, since the 5x4in version was discontinued, but it has been keeping vintage cameras clicking since Polaroid stopped production itself. The next candidate on the extinction list is the wonderful Kodak Portra 100T of which I have only 5 Rolls (120) left.Fujifilm Japan has announced that it is to stop production of its FP-100C instant film that enthusiasts use in old Polaroid-type cameras. Unfortunately, FP-100C will not have been my last last film stock. Thank you for reading this short article! I hope you enjoyed it or at least were able to draw some creative inspiration whatsoever from it. “EXERCISE IN PROPORTIONALITY” FP-100C Silk | Mamiya RB67 PRO SD | SCAN OF BLEACHED NEGATIVE And even if it is only the little moment of joy you feel, when you have overcome a creative struggle, and in the end have produced an image worth looking at. Shooting my last FP 100C was in some way a revelation to me: It made me realize that if we are unfortunate, our most cherished film emulsions will be silently killed off, and that we for as long as we can enjoy shooting them, should shoot every frame as it could be the last. “FLOWER BOUQUET 3” FP-100C Silk | Mamiya RB67 PRO SD | SCAN OF BLEACHED NEGATIVE A reality that will haunt us in the future when Fuji decides to kill first Velvia, then Provia, and then film altogether ( apart from Instax, obviously). Although it was not the very last pack of FP-100C that was shot on this planet, it was my last pack and since I’ve made the decision not to buy “freshly expired” FP-100C for up to €40 (~$46), it was my last pack.Ī sad reality. Future chemical photographers will most likely never get the opportunity to use this brilliant film that gives you a negative and a positive print of superb quality. In some sense, it also was a great privilege to be able to shoot this wonderful film and peel-apart films in general. “FLOWER BOUQUET 2” FP-100C Silk | Mamiya RB67 PRO SD | SCAN OF BLEACHED NEGATIVE I pressured myself to come up with something because the thought of wasting the last peel-apart instant-film I could shoot with my trusty RB67 on a subpar composition felt embarrassing, and so I decided to try multiple exposures. For about five minutes, I sat in a trampled down spot in the tall grass surrounding me and stared at the small purple wild-flowers that grew around me. I sat down and listened to the birds singing in the trees and thought what to do and how to do it. I had something in my mind like “ Steve McCurry shoots his last roll of Kodachrome” and was disappointed when I couldn’t find a composition worth shooting. My expectations were of course, high since I wanted my last frames with this wonderful film at least to be visually pleasing. After I had exposed the first of my four frames I was disappointed because I found the image dull and boring. Realizing that I only had 6 shots left, I decided to wait for the evening to shoot the apple blossoms in the gardens beneath Michelsberg Abbey not far from where I live. For the first four frames I photographed a few friends and gave them the prints but kept the negatives to scan them later, but because I was in a hurry I didn’t let them dry completely which made them stick together and thus destroyed the negatives. I decided to shoot my last pack of FP-100C (silk) on a warm and sunny day in mid-May. Also doesn't take up much real estate on the pedalboard because it's in a compact MXR sized box. There are youtube demos where he does a gliss and it picks up each note as he slides down from fret to fret. 1 cent, and it detects the notes immediately. Because I didn't want to shell out for the Peterson, the Turbo is a good bet. The Sonic Research Turbo Tuner is inexpensive and very very sensitive, far more so than other tuners with rotating displays that are supposed to be strobes. The Planet Waves stomp box tuner didn't hold up for me, and I'm just a casual user - first one died immediately the replacement lasted two years (sometimes it suddenly freezes). The Intellitouch is smaller but harder to position on the headstock where you can see it (works great for cello though). The StroboPLUS HDC is the perfect tuning, ear training and rhythm tool all in one package MORE StroboClip HD - New Price 69.99 59. But guess what, the battery door likes to pop off. The Planet Waves contact tuner that you stick on the headstock is also handy, and pretty accurate although it's a convenience, not something that gets you in strobe territory. And ditto on the battery door that wants to come off if you drop it. However tuning with the pick is a rather slow process. You can tune silenltly with the guitar's volume off, or of course on acoustic guitars. very accurate, even more sensitive than the strobo-stomp. The Planet Waves strobe o pick is a handy gadget. But I think that little strobe pick is rad. Note: I have zero affiliation with Planet Waves, and generally turn my nose up at the rest of their product line. Personally I think the quick-change battery door was the wrong design choice. I've had it about 2 and a half years and it still hasn't killed the battery that was in it when I bought it, even with my kids occasionally stealing it and leaving it on somewhere (thank you auto-off feature!). The battery's never fallen out, but it's a little annoying. I only have one complaint: the battery cover is a little push-and-turn to unlock deal, and it comes loose sometimes during use. It's usable outdoors, but shade is better than direct sun. Tuning accuracy is better than any non-strobe I've used, and it's actually easier to use than the "real" strobe tuners that I've used, because you can hold the light over the 12th fret and easily see the fundamental, rather than have to fight with pickup position sensing overtones. The lights flash at 1/2 the frequency of the silver (guitar) one, but it still works well enough that I don't need any other tuner.
